Presidential Candidate: Dawnee Moreno
Current agency and position:
City of Tuscon - Parks and Recreation Deputy Director
Number of years as an APRA Member:
I have been a member of APRA on and off for the past 20 years. I have been a more active member for the past four years.
Previous positions with APRA:
I have participated in conferences, served on the conference committee and have attended several Teams meetings with the various groups.
What motivates you to be a part of APRA Leadership?
I am motivated by the opportunity to give back to an organization that has reignited my passion for our profession. Being part of the conference committee has exposed me to new friendships, opportunities and experiences. I am excited about being a part of the organization that is shaping our future leaders. I have seen firsthand how APRA empowers professionals through education, networking, and advocacy. Serving in a leadership role allows me to utilize my skills to ensure our association continues to thrive. I am especially inspired by APRA's mission to connect, educate, and inspire. As Vice President, I would be committed to advancing the mission by fostering collaboration across the state and ensure, to the best of my ability that our members feel valued, supported and equipped to meet the evolving needs of their communities.
What do you envision as the primary function of the position you are seeking and what skills do you have that would most benefit the Association if elected to the position?
I envision the Vice President role as both a supportive partner and a forward-looking leader. The VP serves as a key advisor, offering insight, perspective and recommendations that help Board membership stay aligned with APRA's mission. With over 20 years of leadership experience, I bring skills that can help APRA expand its reach. My ability to lead large-scale operations, develop programs, and foster collaborative partnerships positions me to ensure we not only serve current members, but continue to grow and thrive in the future.
One of the greatest challenges facing APRA is the delivery of innovative and applicable professional development opportunities. What approach would you employ towards identifying potential training opportunities and how would you determine their overall effectiveness in meeting the needs of the membership? What strategy would you utilize for the development and implementation of these development opportunities?
I would begin by listening -through surveys, focus groups and direct member engagement. I would want to ensure training opportunities reflect the diverse needs of our statewide membership. In order to identify trends and technology I would leverage our partnerships with universities, NRPA, and our industry vendors. To evaluate effectiveness, I would use measurable outcomes such as participation numbers, member feedback, etc. My strategy would include offering both in person and virtual opportunities to ensure accessibility across our state. I would focus on certifications, leadership development and specialized training. Continuous improvement would be built in by regularly reviewing data and adjusting programs to remain relevant and impactful.
How do you plan to engage with members in your role on the board and what goals do you have to help improve the overall member experience?
I believe engagement starts with being visible and accessible to members. I plan to attend as many meetings and events as possible so I can to listen and connect directly with members. I also see digital communications as a critical tool. We can expand virtual forums and communication platforms to strengthen statewide connections. My goals are to expand mentorship opportunities, improve access to professional development regardless of location, and foster a stronger sense of belonging among our members. By engaging members where they are, both geographically and professionally, I hope to create an inclusive environment where every member feels valued and supported.
As President, you will oversee discussions at the Board level that include multiple agendas, numerous wants and desires of members, and meeting the goals and objectives outlined in the governing documents of APRA, as well as meeting the revenue needs of the Association. Describe your experience in leading a board and the use of Robert’s Rules of Order, and your preferred process to reach consensus in this scenario.
In my current role as Deputy Director, I regularly participate in meetings with diverse stakeholders, including boards, commissions, and community groups. I have developed a strong ability to balance multiple priorities, guide discussion towards solutions and ensure decisions uphold policy, accountability and fiscal oversight. I am familiar with Robert's Rules of Order, (thanks student council, haha) and appreciate the structure and standardization it brings to meetings. It is an effective structure to ensure every voice is heard and at the same time keeps the meetings focused and productive. My leadership style emphasizes transparency, collaboration and respectful dialogue. I would work toward consensus by encouraging open discussion, clarifying key issues and guiding the board toward decisions that reflect both our members needs and the long-term goals of APRA.
What piece(s) of the Strategic Plan are you most excited about executing in your role as Vice President, President Elect, and President over the next 3 years?
I am most excited about advancing professional development opportunities. Professional development is very near and dear to my heart. I want those opportunities to be inclusive, accessible and industry relevant as outline in Strategic Initiative One. Supporting our members through diverse training programs, certifications and partnerships will have a lasting impression on our profession. I am also passionate about money, and would focus on strengthening financial sustainability (Strategic Initiative Four). I look forward to the challenge of discovering new funding streams, expanding sponsorships and diversifying our membership. I believe those efforts will ensure continued growth for APRA for years to come.
