The National Recreation and Park Association offers the industry-leading certification program in playground safety, the Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certification program. The CPSI certification program provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date training on playground safety issues including hazard identification, equipment specifications, surfacing requirements and risk management methods.

Important details/course information below. Read carefully.

COURSE DETAILS | 8:00AM - 5:00PM  WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY

  • Register with the name as it appears on your driver's license to avoid delays in confirming your identify when checking in for the national exam. 
  • To ensure information privacy and test security, the email used in your registration MUST be yours. If your email address does not appear to match your name in any way, APRA will make contact to request updated information. 
  • An accurate mailing address is critical to ensure timely delivery of course materials.
  • The CPSI Manual & Field Guide ship 3-4 weeks before the start of the course to provide  adequate time to review/study the materials.
  • Prereading and content review are critical prior to attendance. Once received, open both the CPSI Manual and the Field Guide for further information. 
  • The course is pre-approved for 1.5 CEUs (provided by NRPA) Sign-In/Out required.
  • Snacks and lunches provided on Wednesday and Thursday - neither on exam day
  • The deadline to register or make changes to an existing registration, including transfers and refund requests, must be made on or before the 45th day prior to the course start date. 

EXAM DAY DETAILS | 8:00AM - 11:15AM FRIDAY

  • Two (2) forms of ID are REQUIRED to take the exam

1) with your name and photo (eg. drivers licence, military ID, passport)

1) with your name and signature (eg. credit or debit card)

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM    Check In 

9:00 AM - 9:15 AM    Exam Instruction

9:15 AM - 11:15 AM  2-Hour Certification Exam (end time dependent on start time)

Leave all food/drinks, study materials and cell phones secured in your vehicle 

The option to take the CPSI exam via computer-based testing is available through the NRPA. To obtain additional information please visit www.nrpa.org/cpsi Be advised if you register to take the examination with the course, you will not receive a refund to take your exam via computer based testing at a later date. Please decide now if you would like to take the exam on Day 3 of the course or via a computer-based exam before you register.

Special Exam Accommodations: Candidates with a disability covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) may request a special accommodation to take the computer based exam. The Special Accommodation form should be completed and submitted to APRA at least 45 days prior to the scheduled date for the course and exam.

English as a Second Language (ESL): English as a second language (ESL) candidates may request a time extension and/or the use of a strict translation dictionary. The ESL Accommodation Request form must be submitted to APRA at least 45 days prior to the scheduled date for the course and exam.

All refunds are subject to a 25% administrative fee

No shows and last minute cancellations forfeit all paid registrations and/or are responsible for full payment of registration.  APRA is required to provide a guaranteed number of participants in advance and must adhere to national deadlines.
