Making Your Community Festivals Better

Vern Biaett, CFEE
Faculty Associate, Arizona State University

“Experience is a good teacher, but not the best teacher – event managers all grow and gain experience with time … the real question is are they getting better?”

There are thousands of governmental or non-profit organizations that include community festivals as part of their programming, but how many maximize their revenues, effectively use their events to grab public attention, or provide truly great experiences for their stakeholders? Vern, who produced events for 35 years as a leisure services practitioner, much of that managing major festivals in Phoenix and Glendale, and is currently part of the ASU Special Event Certificate program, has designed this workshop with one goal … to make festivals, and those who produce them, better!

The workshop will focus on finances … cost-revenue management, sponsorship, and revenue generation. It will focus on marketing … promotion and communication. It will focus on program planning … understanding what festivity is about and how to design experience. It will focus on much more than the basics … not just how to do these things, but how to do these things better.
